Finals time. All in the eye of the beer-holder.

Footy finals time – so much energy directed into fewer and fewer teams until there becomes such a burning hot focus on two groups of young men, so supremely blessed with foot skills and enviable strength through the hips, that Melbourne seems absolutely fit to burst. And then suddenly, it’s all over and the strong […]

A week to be thankful. Christmas specials and a little break.

Over December I’ve been on long service leave with my family in Vietnam. We’ve just been to Can Tho on the Mekong River to visit the famous floating wholesale produce market. That’s it in the pic above, if you are a vegetable logistics enthusiast it’s a must see. Later that day at our hotel while I was watching our kids swim in the pool I got talking to a young waiter called Khanh. Khanh was the first son of a rice farmer and had come to Can Tho to study and find work. The next night we all went out for dinner and learnt a little aboutKhanh’s life. Fresh out of university with a degree in tourism Khanh hoped one day to be a tour guide but for the moment was working two hospitality jobs (he also had a job at a local Burger King). He told me his wages were about $150 month, $50 of that going to pay for his room in a boarding house. Later when we went for ice cream I worked out the price of our 5 cones were equivalent to Khanh’s wages for that day. Now Khanh isn’t badly off by Vietnam standards; he’s educated, well fed and clothed, has a steady income and good prospects. There are many people in his community living far more precarious existences but It just made me think […]

What are you up to on Fat Tuesday?

So next week on the 9th February it’s Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday, which we know better as Mardi Gras. Pancake Day happens on the eve of Ash Wednesday, the first day of the 40 day Lent fast. In many places there is an accompanying Fat Thursday where literally you eat all […]

Shortbread honouring and deadly cowcumbers. Shop News.

This is the last recipe/specials newsletter for the year (there’s one more Sunday newsletter). Thanks for putting up with all the puns and the 70’s smooth music references. If you’re off over Christmas have a great break and if you’re working may your workplace be unnaturally relaxed and oddly spacious. Thanks for supporting Fair Food […]

SMOKEY CORN AND THE PLANETARY PUSH NOTIFICATION

I noticed there’s a cleaning theme going on with some of the products on special this week. I don’t know where it comes from but lately I feel like there’s something of a simplify, declutter, clean-up thing going on in our collective consciousness . With all the KonMari-ing, digital detox and “Go without months” are […]

Harvest Festival, Fair Food Survey, Cheap Pulses, Job Going at Fair Food

I was having a look through this year’s CERES Harvest Festival program and it’s getting really big. CERES’ most joyous day has become almost country fair-like and as always it’s grounded with an undercurrent of thanksgiving for the food we harvest, cook and eat week in and week out. The first thing I always do at Harvest Festival is head […]
